Mihaly is a gifted musician and fatalist who has embraced his coming death.
Biography[ | ]
Mihaly is a musician, and an old spirit who fancies himself an academic, philosopher, and in touch with the human condition more than anyone else alive. He is in his 40s, and has been wheelchair bound since he was a child due to an unknown degenerative disease.
Mihaly is obsessed with beauty, particularly in music. He has learned to play several instruments, piano first and foremost among them (though he cannot use the pedals) although curiously does not write any music himself. He also finds joy in poetry, in paintings, and in watching dance (he is aware that he cannot participate, but it doesn’t phase him; Mihaly still finds beauty). Interestingly, he only looks for aesthetic when man-made. Nature only offers Mihaly, at most, a pretty view.
Because he is an atheist, his relationship with Borbalo is strained, and his relationship with Bernadett is outright hostile. Forcing Mihaly to confront the supernatural directly is the only way to repair these relationships.
Mihaly does appreciate Rozsa for giving him a place to play, (although he doesn’t play to perform, he plays for himself) and hopes that she shares in his love for music. She has also accumulated a number of books and built a makeshift library in the inn, and has bedrooms on the first floor; all of these factors together have influence Mihaly to move into the inn, and he is now a permanent resident there, playing piano for his room and board.
Additionally, as Mihaly and Gusztav grew up together, they share an interesting bond. Gusztav has always tried to cure Mihaly’s condition, and is forever testing Mihaly with new treatments and new tests. Nothing has worked, and Mihaly isn’t terribly interested in being Gusztav’s test subject, but the two have shared a lot of time together as a result of Gusztav’s insistence. Although they have very different personalities, they have become friends over a shared admiration for the intelligence of the other - something both value above nearly anything else.
