Preceded By:
Check Up
Precedes:
Faith in the Dead
Reward:
Pocketwatch*, Loaf of Bread*

"The Second Son" is a quest the player will receive from Sandor on the first day. It is one of the few quests in the game which is compulsive; the player must receive it in order to advance. It takes place primarily in the Ice Cave.

Conditions[ | ]

None - after completing "Check Up" at the beginning of the game, a cutscene will trigger at the inn. After the cutscene, the player will automatically have this quest. Sandor will ask the player to enter the cave and rescue Erik.

Completing the Quest[ | ]

Reaching Erik's Cave[ | ]

The entrance to Erik's cave spawns in either the first or second room of the Ice Cave. It is only available on the first two days of the game - on day 3, the entrance to the cave is removed.

Spoiler warning: Significant plot details follow.
On entering the cave, the player's time is reset to 7 minutes, regardless of how much time they had left in the day. After a brief cutscene, the player is given 7 minutes to solve a challenging frictionless ice puzzle. The player must alternate between controlling the Stranger and Erik, with the main goal of guiding Erik to the center of the room.

The puzzle can take one of two forms. If the puzzle spawns on the left side of the room, there are four colored directional arrows which Erik needs to navigate. The arrows can be rotated by the Stranger. If the puzzle spawns on the right side of the room, there are four colored doors which will block Erik's path when raised, or allow Erik to pass when lowered. The Stranger can toggle those doors.

If Erik reaches the center of the map before the end of the 7 minutes, the quest is considered "succeeded." Otherwise, the quest is considered "failed." In either instance, Erik is killed and the day is immediately over. The player goes back to town and another villager is killed.

Timing Out

If the player has not entered Erik's cave by day 3, the entrance is removed and replaced with Erik's corpse. To complete the quest, the player only has to interact with the corpse and report back to Sandor.

If at any point after day 3 Borbalo has died, Sandor will have given up hope on finding Erik. The quest can be completed without finding Erik's corpse, simply by speaking to Sandor.

Rewards

Rewards are determined based on two factors. First, whether the quest was successful, a failure, or timed out. Second, whether Borbalo is alive at the time the quest is returned to Sandor. The status of Sandor's faith can be impacted by several quests, events, and deaths, and impacts what quests he will offer the player and when.

  • If the quest was successful and Borbalo is alive, the player will receive the pocketwatch and the quest "Faith in the Dead" will be automatically given to the player. Sandor will retain his faith.
  • If the quest was successful and Borbalo is dead, the player will receive the pocketwatch, but Sandor will lose his faith.
  • If the quest was failed and Borbalo is alive, the player will receive nothing, but the quest "Faith in the Dead" will be available from Borbalo. Sandor will lose his faith.
  • If the quest was failed and Borbalo is dead, the player receives nothing and Sandor will lose his faith.
  • If the quest timed out and Borbalo is alive, the player receives a loaf of bread, and Sandor retains his faith.
  • If the quest timed out and Borbalo is dead, the player receives nothing and Sandor will lose his faith.
